Off-Campus Study

Concord Academy

Several study programs are available for students who wish to explore worlds beyond the school campus.

CITYterm

Hosted by the Masters School in New York, CITYterm is a hands-on, academic and community-service oriented program that accepts thirty students from public and private high schools each semester. Open to juniors and seniors, the program uses an interdisciplinary approach to teach about urban life and related issues while introducing participants to New York City.

Maine Coast Semester

The Maine Coast Semester offers eleventh-grade students a unique program of living and learning on a 400-acre peninsula in Wiscasset, Maine. The buildings are rustic, the atmosphere is informal, and the community is small—only thirty-six students and thirteen faculty members. Hosted by the Chewonki Foundation, the academic program is designed to support and enrich the junior year curriculum. Through intellectual challenge both in and out of the classroom, and through work in the afternoons on the farm and in the woodlot, students and faculty learn about living and working with other people, about the satisfaction that comes from hard work, and about the importance of stewardship in and for a changing world.

Mountain School

At the Mountain School, forty-five juniors from public and independent schools across the United States live and study for a semester on a 300-acre working farm in Vershire, Vermont. The goal of the program, hosted by Milton Academy, is to foster a sense of stewardship for the environment while upholding rigorous academic standards. Students study in the mornings and evenings and spend afternoons planting and harvesting gardens, caring for animals, managing woodlots, and maintaining the farm. They also acquire practical knowledge in such areas as woodworking, riding, astronomy, spinning and knitting, fly fishing, woodlot management, and maple sugaring.

Rocky Mountain Semester

The High Mountain Institute in Leadville, Colorado is an outdoor opportunity for semester study that places emphasis on experiential education. During the Rocky Mountain Semester program, students study a range of natural and cultural courses, and use the area’s vast natural resources as inspiration.

Study Abroad

Several programs are available for students who wish to study abroad. The program most frequently used is the School Year Abroad program, through which students can spend a year in Rennes, France; Zaragoza, Spain; Beijing, China; or Viterbo, Italy (Latin). School Year Abroad offers intensive experience in the language and culture of another country without interrupting progress toward graduation and college. Mathematics and English classes are the only courses taught in English. Living arrangements are with families. To spend a year in Germany, students may apply for the Congress-Bundestag program.

Representatives from various summer programs come to Concord Academy during the fall and winter to explain their offerings (it is CA policy to invite only those programs that offer financial aid). The school library houses a collection of brochures about summer programs abroad; students can also speak with their language teacher for study abroad ideas. In alternate years, students from Concord Academy can participate in a three-week summer program with the Europa-Kolleg in Kassel, Germany.
